Review: Gluten Free Muffin-in-a-Cup Mixes from Wheat Free Market
When I was first diagnosed with gluten sensitivity, there wasn’t a whole lot of great information around that I could pick up and read. It made me feel even more like I was alone on the journey except for the saving grace of a few good Gluten-Free blogs on the web. However, times have changed and now there’s so many resources out there that it can be difficult to choose which to pick up. And that, my friends, can leave you feeling overwhelmed by information.
That’s where two books come in to save the day: “Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting and Thriving Gluten-Free” by Melinda Dennis, MS, RD, LDN and Daniel A. Leffler, MD, MS and “Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide” by Shelley Case, BSc, RD. Both are excellent resources that should become a part of your gluten-free library to help you stay on the straight and narrow. Whether you’re new to the Gluten-Free world or you’ve been in this boat for awhile now and need some extra support as your diet and lifestyle continue to evolve, you’ll find these books helpful.
The “Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide” authored by Shelley Case is an excellent resource book, rather than a straight-ahead book that you’d read cover-to-cover. She’s complied a great deal of information about various types of foods (both safe and unsafe), discusses how to create a Gluten-Free meal plan (which seems to be very difficult for people to generally do, and provides extensive food product listings which will certainly help a newbie track down food which may or may not be readily available in their local grocer.
Most of the book is laid out in tables so that you can get directly to the info you need without added fluff. There are also a short collection of recipes which introduce the reader to possibly new Gluten-Free whole grains. Ms. Case also spends a considerable amount of space exploring controversies such as oats, product labeling and various types of additives and binders that frequent Gluten-Free products.
Shifting gears to “Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting and Thriving Gluten-Free” from Ms. Dennis and Dr. Leffler, you’ll find a book that you can sit down with and easily read through that covers a multitude of health issues and details associated with Celiac Disease. Each chapter is uniquely presented through the lens of an actual patient account so that the reader can see how the problem would literally show up in real life, what the experts see and suggest and how the patient then moves forward. Though this book is written by medical experts in the field, I honestly feel that they’ve done an excellent job at simplifying each topic so that us ‘regular’ folk can understand the topics at hand.
If anything, describing this book as “Troubleshooting and Thriving” is incredibly accurate because Ms. Dennis and Dr. Leffler document various ‘issues’ through small chapters which are then broken down, explained in layman’s terms and then solved. Then they show how the solutions are put into place so that you can literally see how to do this for yourself. Whether you’re curious about nutritional deficiencies, gut issues commonly associated with Celiac, genetic testing, hormonal issues including Diabetes & Celiac Disease, supplements and medication, “Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting and Thriving Gluten-Free” has answers for you.
Overall, these two texts should be on your list to buy and read. Simple, straight-forward and easy-to-read, “Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting and Thriving Gluten-Free” and “Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide” will be excellent resources for your continued learning on the Gluten-Free path.
